Heading Out To See the West

Jonathan and I are getting ready to take off on a road trip through 10 states. It’s the longest road trip either of us have ever taken (about 5,000 miles). We are going to visit Zion, Yellowstone, Glacier and some other national parks while we are traveling. We are meeting up with two more car loads of my family in Fergus Falls, Minnesota and then we are going to caravan around North Dakota to see where our Norwegian ancestors homesteaded when they first came to the US in the 1860′s. We are really excited. The car is getting tuned up today and we are starting to pack.

Any suggestions on must see things to visit along our route?
What are the must see sites at Glacier and Yellowstone?

Photos From My Visit To Roberto Burle Marx’s Estate In Brazil

Back in fall 2009 Jonathan and I went to South America for a month. While we were in Brazil we went to visit the Sitio Roberto Burle Marx about an hour outside of Rio de Janeiro. Roberto Burle Marx is one of the greats of landscape architecture, known for creating bold, colorful landscapes using the native plants of South America. He is one of my favorite designers and I always find inspiration looking at his work. The large estate served as his home, studio, test garden and plant nursery. The tours of the estate were only in Portuguese so we couldn’t really understand anything they said, but the place really speaks for itself. Here are a few of the 500+ photos I took:

GREEN WALLS
I recently finished a green atrium project for a mid-century house in the Pacific Palisades. I created two new green walls that face one another, refurbished the water feature and added a black tumble rock “beach”. Originally, it was a space to look into, but now it is a garden room that you can enter. It has a chapel like quality. I think it would be a great spot to meditate and do yoga in the early AM.

Here I am adjusting the plants — they have only been planted for one week when this photo was taken. They are already giving good coverage, but eventually they will get a lot larger and poke out from the wall more.

ILLINOIS: LAND OF LINCOLN
We went on our yearly trip to Illinois to visit family and friends. I shot this selfie at the family farm in McLean County, Illinois. I also posted some photos of apple picking on the farm.

CHICAGO-LAND
Jonathan and I had a great time catching up with my childhood friend, Jeannie Gallucci. She is a lawyer in Chicago who recently started an organic tampon empire. Check out her company website, Orchidea — you can sign up to get auto-deliveries of organic tampons!

AUTUMN
It has been an especially c-r-a-z-y month, between travel, BREAKurban projects, a top secret project (I will tell you about it very soon!) and my LASIK surgery. I haven’t had the time to keep up with my blogging as much as I want to (partially because I can SEE the computer very well), but you can always follow along with what I am doing on Instagram.

+ I am really thrilled it’s fall, even though it is still 90 degrees in LA. Last weekend I took a mountain of boots to the cobbler to get polished and got an orange manicure. The summer garden is getting cleared from the test garden this week and we will plant the winter garden (potatoes, carrots, beets, peas, etc.) next week. The knives need to be dropped off to get sharpened. And I am already starting to order caramel making supplies. This is my favorite time of the year~

Happy autumn, northern hemisphere!

Week In Photos: Apple Picking On The Family Farm

apples Week in Photos: Apple Picking on the Family Farm

I’m on the road this week visiting my family in Illinois. My dad and grandpa and I did some serious apple picking out at our family farm. The trees were so loaded some of the branches had broken or had bent and touching the ground. Some went to the local shelters and more bags were packed up for family and friends.

Grandpa and Dad in front of some Jonathan apple trees. The corn and soy beans still hasn’t been harvested yet. They have a few more weeks left. We really need about 1/2″ more rain for the soybeans – fingers crossed.

These trees were planted about 40 years ago. I remember picking trees at the older orchard with my great-grandparents when I was a kid.

I wish I could take a basket of apples back to LA – but alas I have to eat them here. Nom-nom.
